The English Middle Baroque period encompasses a major period of social unrest in England. Charles I defended his throne in a Civil War and was beheaded in 1649. Puritan values contributed to a general suppression of many forms of music. Public forms of music for the people developed during the Protectorate. With the Restoration (1660) there was a general return of the musical life under Charles I. The Chapel Royal was reorganized under Cooke as a new major centre for liturgical music. Many new European music styles were introduced at Court. Jenkins, Lawes, and Locke are some of the major composers.
