& Hints for the Step-by-Step instructions
recommended by Tim the Tinter for applying
window film. |
|
Step
1
Wet the window with the mounting
solution / distilled water mixture. Scrape the window all the way to
the edges to thoroughly clean it with a new razor blade. If you are using
Film On®, then use a different window cleaner to prep the glass. The Triumph
6" double sided blade is shown in the example picture. |
|
Hint:
Pick a time of day when the window is not in direct sunlight to clean and
install the film product.
Hint: Scrape the
window by pushing the blade at right angles into the edge to avoid
breaking the blade.
|
|
|
|
Step
2
Clean the window dry with a channel
squeegee or small prep squeegee going horizontally across the glass.
Use a smaller squeegee to wipe around the edges. |
|
Hints:
Wipe the edge of the squeegee with a lint free towel each time you pick it
up off the glass to avoid re-applying the dirt or dust to the glass. |
|
|
|
Step
3
Pull the liner off of the film, wet the adhesive and/or the glass and
apply the film by aligning it with one or two of the edges of the window. The
user friendly adhesive will allow you to slide the film into place with a
little bit overlapping the edges. Sometimes it is necessary to overlap all
four edges and cut each to fit. |
|
Hint:
Bend the corner of the film that you are going to cut off and pick at it
to remove the liner. You can also brush your finger or thumb across a
corner until it separates.
Hint:
Avoid spraying water into the edges of the window and causing dirt in the
seal to flow out.
Hint: Sometimes
it helps to cut the film first, then pull the liner and install to avoid a lot
of dirt being trapped underneath.
|
|
|
|
Step
4
Tack the film with a squeegee
in the middle by moving the water towards the edges while holding it in
place. Then trim the film to fit and pull away the excess.
|
|
Hint:
Keep a sharp blade and cut out or away from the edges. It helps to
slightly raise the end of your cutting guide to get the knife close in the
corners. |
|
|
|
Step
5 Final squeegee the entire window using a yellow
turbo film squeegee or sputtered film squeegee. Push the water all the
way out using overlapping strokes and going to the edge of the film. If
installing a thick film or sputtered film, you will want to go over
the window twice.
Slowly go around the edges with a hard card and a paper towel wrapped
around it to tack the
edges well. |
|
Hint:
Push hard on the final squeegee to remove as much of the water as
possible.
Hint: Keep
repositioning the paper towel on the hard card when tacking the edges to
avoid dragging dirt across the film. |
