BULLETS
March 2018
- Bruce “Call Me Caitlin” Jenner is being named Champion of Israel and LGBTQ Rights at the Jewish Values Awards gala in NYC this month.
- Non-Persons. “Jewish rabbinic authorities, starting with the Middle Ages, say that a fetus is not a person,” said Rabbi Charles Feinberg after blessing a Maryland clinic where LeRoy Carhart performs late-term abortions. “Judaism has always said abortion is never murder. … It only becomes that once the baby is born.”
- Why is there so much concern about Russian efforts to influence American elections but so little concern about Israeli efforts?
February 2018
- Al Franken’s legacy is intact: his appointed Senate replacement is a former Planned Parenthood official.
- Suspended Animation. In November, a Tennessee woman, Tina Gibson, gave birth to a girl, Emma, who was frozen as an embryo in 1992, when Tina was a year old.
- Has he told the Vatican? “That fabled [Judeo-Christian] tradition does not exist, nor does the ‘Judeo-Christian ethic,’” writes Raymond Apple, emeritus rabbi of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, in the Jerusalem Post. “Though sharing a common origin in the Hebrew Scriptures, the two faiths read the scriptural texts differently. They believe in God, but view Him through different lenses. They each have a story, but they are not the same. They each have a concept of man, but they are not the same. They are both ethical religions, but with separate ideas of man’s nature, salvation and destiny.”
January 2018
- The House of Cards toppled on Kevin Spacey.
- Student loans are the largest source of Americans’ household debt other than home mortgages.
- Perhaps the Vatican will issue a Ted Hesburgh stamp on the five hundredth anniversary of the Land O’ Lakes Statement.
December 2017
- Is Harvey Weinstein an anti-Semitic caricature?
- Credo in unum America? Ex-Pres George W. Bush denounced “blasphemy against the American creed.”
- Season of the Witch. Woody Allen warned against “a witch hunt” in the wake of the exposure of sexual predator Harvey Weinstein. What a character witness.
The final page of each monthly issue of Culture Wars consists of short commentary, entitled Bullets,
written by James G. Bruen, Jr. This web page is a sampling of Bullets from recent issues.
